HEARING LOSS
In order to understand the various causes and presentations of hearing loss it is important to first appreciate How the Ear Works, and to best understand your hearing you will need to undergo a hearing evaluation.
Hearing Evaluation
When a hearing loss is suspected, a hearing evaluation is performed. The hearing evaluation assists the audiologist in determining the type, configuration and severity of hearing loss, if any. On occassion, more specialized testing may also be recommend (e.g. Auditory Brainstem Response testing).
Hearing Loss - Type
Hearing loss can be categorized by which part of the auditory system is damaged. There are three basic types of hearing loss: sensorineural, conductive and mixed.
Hearing Loss - Configuration
The configuration, or shape, of the hearing loss refers to the degree and pattern of hearing loss across frequencies (tones), as illustrated in a graph called an audiogram.
Hearing Loss - Degree
Degree of hearing loss refers to the severity of the loss; a classification system, from mild to profound, is used.
